Exploring the Science of Healing

The Samueli Institute for Information Biology (SIIB) is a non-profit, non-affiliated medical research organization supporting the scientific investigation of healing processes and their application in health and disease. Healing is the foundation for a vision of medicine that integrates diverse approaches from around the world for the alleviation of suffering, the enhancement of well-being, the prevention and treatment of chronic illness and the establishment of sustainable approaches in healthcare.

The Institute conducts and supports innovative and rigorous scientific research through a network of clinical and laboratory programs around the world. The Institute Executive Staff, a Board of Directors, a Scientific Advisory Committee, and a Vision and Planning Group guide these programs.

VISION
Our vision is a world in which healing processes are the formative concept for achieving and maintaining wellness and ameliorating chronic disease.

MISSION
Our mission is to explore the scientific foundations of healing and to apply that understanding in medicine and health care.

VALUES
The Samueli Institute’s work is founded in a body of core values which guide all operations, both internal and external.  They are: service, beneficence, rigor, integrity, excellence, commitment, curiosity, respect, honesty, faith, teamwork, humility, transformation, courage, wonder and joy.

GOALS
The goals of the Samueli Institute are 1) to determine the components and evaluate the impact of optimal healing environments and complementary and alternative medicine practices on wellness, clinical and health care delivery outcomes; 2) to investigate the fundamental mechanisms whereby information, the mind and relationships promote healing; 3) to elucidate the fundamental biological mechanisms underlying complementary and alternative and traditional medicine practices; 4) to produce technologies that objectively monitor the healing dynamics of biological systems and therapies that enhance these innate healing processes; and, 5) to understand and communicate the fundamental nature of reality as it relates to the conscious application of healing practices.

COMMUNITY
The Samueli Institute provides support to and works cooperatively with inter-disciplinary investigators in implementing research on healing, and convenes conferences to review, discuss and recommend areas of importance in healing research.
