Traditional and International Medicine Research

In support of its mission to transform health care through the scientific exploration of healing, Samueli Institute leads a rigorous research program that seeks to determine the value and effects of traditional and indigenous healing practices on conditions of global significance.

We conduct rigorous research, while preserving and respecting these healing traditions as they are practiced in their country of origin. This research develops and tests integrative, whole-systems models of documentation, education, and effective integration of traditional healing practices with allopathic medicine.

The following are the specific aims of the research:

  1. Infrastructure: Identify and pursue opportunities for support and conduct of quality research on traditional medicine approaches that address key public health areas, such as cancer and HIV/AIDS.
  2. Partnerships: Develop a network of international partners and interdisciplinary study teams with capacity to develop, advance and conduct rigorous research.
  3. State of the Science: Compile and assess the evidence base supporting specific TCAM approaches to major international health care problems, through clinical and observational studies, as well as systematic reviews.
  4. State of the Practice: Identify, document and synthesize data related to TCAM therapies currently in use, while preserving and respecting these healing traditions as they are practiced in their country of origin.
  5. Research Translation: Translate results from research to benefit public and global health in developing countries, such as by producing low-cost
  6. Dissemination: Disseminate research findings via journal publications and conferences.
  7. Methodology: Develop and test innovative methodologies and evidence-based, whole-systems models for integration of TCAM with allopathic care.
