Scientific Research

The Samueli Institute is committed to the rigorous scientific investigation of healing and healing practices.  Research is conducted by employing state-of -the-art developments in the biosciences, coupled with innovative and translational research strategies.  Partners in this scientific exploration include large and small health care systems, some of the nation’s most renowned academic organizations, researchers in countries that have emerging scientific sophistication, and researchers in the United States Armed Forces. With our partners and associates, our research spans basic science, clinical, health services and the social sciences. Together, our discoveries may find new ways for health care providers to use less invasive procedures and fewer pharmaceutical drugs in health care, address problems posed by new viruses and other emerging diseases and provide new technologies, tools and options for policy-makers, patients and health care providers.

Samueli Institute is committed to rigorous scientific exploration of healing through the use of clinical, basic and health services research. We have four program areas:

Research Expertise

Samueli Institute Strategic Plan defines the Institute's current research goals and objectives. The federal government, private industry, foundations, professional societies, individuals, and academic institutions also suggest and support research studies.

Studies may be narrow in scope, designed to answer very specific and technical questions, or may be broad-based examinations that span academic and healing disciplines, industries, and even international borders.  Additionally, Samueli Institute provides an integrated research approach with expertise within the Institute and gathered from the many diverse research relationships with complementary, alternative and integrative health care providers across the country and around the world.

Many health issues are complex because they span across disciplines and can extend beyond science. We have the expertise and ability to bridge these disciplines, allowing us to research and forge solutions that are practical, applicable and integrative. Our approach is to take into account the whole person including environment, belief systems, and general care needs―combining both allopathic and non-allopathic methods.
