Donation Creates the Samueli Institute Laurance S. Rockefeller Program on Mind/Healing Research
Samueli Institute has received a $2.5 million gift from the Laurance S. Rockefeller Fund to support the Institute’s brain, mind and healing program with specific focus on mind/healing research.
“This generous gift from the Laurance S. Rockefeller Fund will help to move the field definitively forward and will be instrumental in bringing together scientists, academicians, funding organizations and policy makers. Our goal is to develop a research agenda that allows sustainable research efforts into the future,” said Wayne Jonas, MD, president and CEO of the Samueli Institute. “Our program will capitalize on the wide and growing interest in the field of brain, mind, and healing science as it applies to the health and well-being of patients. And, our work will build on current and ongoing studies that are show how the mind, both conscious and unconscious, may play an essential role in health status.”
This contribution is not the first time the Laurance S. Rockefeller Fund has supported the Samueli Institute. In 2000, the two organizations began collaborating in support of basic and clinical research focusing on the identification and measurement of mind-body-energy in healing by convening a series of three conferences: The Science and Spirituality of Healing (North Carolina, October 2000), Bridging Worlds and Filling Gaps in the Science of Spiritual Healing (Hawaii, November 2001), and the Fourteenth Symposium on Life Information Science (Japan, August 2002). As a result, a book of conference proceedings and a critical analysis of the literature were published and ten research projects conducted.
