Niko Kohls, PhD, PD

Senior Fellow
Dr. Niko Kohls, PD, has been researching the relationship between spirituality, health and distress as a psychologist for more than a decade. He was named a Fellow in the Samueli Institute’s Center for Brain, Mind and Healing in 2007. Dr. Kohls is responsible for establishing a new research area: “Psychophysiology of Consciousness: Spirituality, Mindfulness, Quality of Life and Health” at the Generation Research Program of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich.

He investigates the relationship between spirituality, exceptional human experiences and mental health and obtained his diploma (Dipl. Psych) in 1994 and his PhD in 2004. Niko developed a questionnaire for the measurement of exceptional and spiritual experiences as a part of his PhD thesis and through it found impressive links between spiritual experience and its preventive qualities for some mental health conditions.

As a post-doctoral candidate, Niko worked at the University Hospital Freiburg until 2005, at which time he took a position at the University of Northampton in Great Britain. While there, he helped to establish a postgraduate MSC program, “The Psychology of Consciousness,” which addresses the relationship between spirituality and health. Dr. Kohls was appointed to Full Professor of Health Sciences at the University of Coburg in September of 2013.

As a Samueli Fellow, Dr. Kohls collaborates with Dr. John Ives, Director of the Center for Brain, Mind and Healing and Prof. Harald Walach. (Dr. Walach is Director of the Samueli Doctoral Program in Consciousness and Spirituality Studies at the Viadrina University, Frankfurt / Oder and is coordinator of the European Operations for Brain, Mind and Healing.)
