Michael Smith, BPharm, ND, is a Senior Fellow for Integrative Medicine. Smith is a Pharmacist and a Naturopathic Doctor and a graduate of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. His focus is international projects as well as research dealing with the regulation, use and policy development of dietary supplements and natural health products.

From 2001 until 2009, Smith has held a number of senior management positions at the Natural Health Products Directorate, Health Canada responsible for research support, international collaboration and stakeholder engagement.

From 2009 to 2011 he was the Assistant Secretary/Head of the Office of Complementary Medicine at the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia where he was responsible for the Australian regulations for complementary medicines (dietary supplements in the U.S.).

In 2008, Smith was appointed to the 12 person World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Advisory Panel on Traditional and Complementary Medicines. He played an active role in the development of the Western Pacific Regional Office of the WHO Regional Strategic Plan for Traditional Medicines and is currently working as one of three technical advisors on an updated WHO Global Strategy for Traditional and Complementary Medicines expected in 2014.
