C. PURPOSE AND FOCUS
This was an invitational conference to develop
consensus on the definitions of healing energy, healing intention and the
healing relationship, and to create research protocols and methodologies that
will become the standards for basic and clinical research in these fields of
inquire. Six working groups of clinical and basic research leaders (in the
fields of clinical medicine, clinical nursing, distant healing intention,
spirituality and prayer, bioenergy, and healing relationships) prepared drafts
of position papers in the months before the actual conference. At the
conference, each committee’s position paper was critically reviewed by the
plenary assembly and the paper revised as final iteration.
D. AUDIENCE
Basic and clinical research scientists, clinicians,
philosophers and administrators at the meeting, and the subscription list of the
journal Alternative Therapies as the eventual audience.
E. OUTCOME
The content of this Conference was published as
a Supplement to the May 2003 issue of Alternative Therapies, a peer-reviewed
journal listed on PubMed. An abstract containing
recommended protocol formats was published in the Journal of Alternative and
Complementary Medicine 10:171-181, 2004.
